IKNM/KAM CELEBRATES CULTURAL ICONS
We take this opportunity to showcase some of the people in the Marianas who continue to sustain the Chamorro and Carolinian traditional knowledge and values. Over the years, some of these individuals have been recognized and were given awards for their contributions and commitments to preserve and promote the cultures and traditions in our islands. We will share some of the accomplishments of these individuals and others who will be willing to also share some of their stories.

Donald Mendiola, Saipan
A suruhånu and master weaver. Donald is also a long-time teacher in the public school system in the CNMI. More recently, the 22 nd CNMI Legislature adopted Senate Resolution 22-24 (shown below) that describes his journey as a suruhånu and master weaver, which cited some of the numerous awards and recognitions in previous years. Some of his accomplishments are available in the links below. Donald is also featured in the book on traditional healers and medicinal plants published in 2009 that will be reprinted this year (2022).
